I've had that exact same experience before a number of times. In Morocco, I met of number of Muslims who were great, honest, generous people who were also devout followers of Islam. I've had the same experience with Christians and Hindus, and a number of the most wonderful and giving people I know are either atheist or agnostic. The faith itself is more-or-less irrelevant to the basic human message.
